Early 13th Floor Elevators now. Originally released as part of the VERY limited box set 'Sign Of The 3 Eyed Men' and then as a stand alone release on the same label the following year, this is a collection of pre 'The Psychedelic Sounds of...' recordings.

The band secured a recording session with Gordon Byden to record a single in January 1966 and released debut single 'You're Gonna Miss Me' b/w 'Tried to Hide' on the hastily arranged Contact records. That single is included on this album, as well as other tracks recorded at an additional session in February 1966.

Taking advantage of the time at Andrus Studio, Houston, Texas, the band recorded an albums worth of songs.

After the release of the single, the band went on tour and were promptly signed by International Artists. These recordings were dropped as the band started to record their debut proper.

A lot of the tracks from that debut album appear here. I imagine this collection was the bands live repertoire at the time.

A cool lo-fi alternate debut album from Texas' finest, Roky is already great.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Midnight

Self Made Compilation 2018

01 New Rising Sun
02 Look Over Yonder
03 Midnight
04 Red House
05 Stone Free
06 Calling All the Devil's Children
07 Hear My Train a Comin'
08 Peace in Mississippi

A fictional Hendrix album now. All material presented here was performed by The Jimi Hendrix Experience and recorded after the completion of 'Electric Ladyland' but before sessions for the final (but never completed) album.

Hendrix continued recording after the session for 'Electric Ladyland', but with no real focus in mind.
Shortly after, he would dissolve the Experience and start the funk trio Band Of Gypsys. The material from this interim period wasn't carried over for inclusion on the 'First Rays of the new Rising Sun' / 'Straight Ahead' project.

A lot of the stuff here is strong; loud, fuzzed out jams, with three instrumental tracks included. The 'Band Of Gypsys' album was handed over to the record label as a contractual obligation, this album of completed Experience tracks could of done that.

Not that I'm complaining about 'Band Of Gypsys', it's wonderful.

Grouper - He Knows He Knows He Knows

Collective Jyrk 2006

01 He Knows
02 He Knows
03 He Knows

Haven't posted any Grouper in a long time. An earlier release here. Guitar pedal drone experiments.

The original release was a mini CDr sold at shows on a Canadian tour. The same year also saw an even more limited version on Something on the Road records for Israel.

Finally, Grouper self released a 7" version in 2009.

The Byrds - Byrds '69

Alternate album 1969

01 This Wheel's On Fire
02 Child of the Universe
03 Candy
04 Bad Night at the Whiskey
05 King Apathy III
06 Your Gentle Way of Loving Me
07 Old Blue
08 Drug Store Truck Drivin' Man
09 Lay Lady Lay
10 Stanley's Song
11 Nashville West

Another Byrds album and period re-imagined. This time it's 1969's 'Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde'.

Opinions are split over this album and it was also one of the worst selling. Bob Johnson's poor production didn't help, but the 90's Columbia re-issues cleaned it up a bit.

I thought the main problem was the flow; on this alternate version I've placed all the psychedelic and fuzz toned songs on side 1 and the country material on side 2 (beginning with 'Your Gentle Way of Loving Me').

In addition to this I removed the medley of 'My Back Pages/B.J. Blues/Baby What You Want Me to Do' and included an alternate version of the non album single 'Lay Lady Lay' and the album outtake 'Stanley's Song'.

Wilco are not an obvious choice for this blog, but twenty years ago they released their most experimental album 'Yankee Hotel Foxtrot'. Along with it came two bootlegs, 'Engineer Demos' and 'YHF Demos' containing several alternate versions and enough unused original songs for at least another album.

I combined these along with the contemporary 'More Like The Moon' E.P. and a couple of b-sides.

From my own stash of 2000's CDr's.

14 Haruomi Hosono - Original BGM

Throughout the first lockdown of 2021, I watched 'The Witches and the Grinnygog'; a BBC children's television program from 1983. I included the main themes and a piece of the broadcast that had distorted sound.

'Galatea's Guitar' by Gabor Szabo is some Hungarian jazz folk from 1968. From the album 'In Dreams'.

'The War' by Shelley was the b-side of their only single, 'Please Please Please', from 1966.

The House In The Woods is a pseudonym of Pye Corner Audio. Released on Bandcamp 2020.

The Neighb'rhood Childr'n were San Francisco contemporaries of Jefferson Airplane in 1966/67.

Jazz pal Vincent recommended the Christian Scott a Tunde Adjuah track from 2020.

'Police Police Police Police Police' is New York ambient minimalism from the 2014 album 'Tomorrow Was The Golden Age'.

'Didier's Sound Spectrum' is 2002 Swedish funk.

'Perverse Isabelle' was a 1975 sexploitation film by Jose Benazeraf. The soundtrack composer is unknown. Thanks Escapists Advisor.

Sunforest I've included on many a mix. 1970 hippie psych.

The Jesse Sparhawk track was taken from the 2006 Various Artists album 'Imaginational Anthem - Volume Two'. Released on the Tompkins Square label.

Haruomi Hosono 'Original BGM' was taken from 'BGM 1980-2000'.
