09 I'm Hiding My Nightingale

Just a note before the details of this entry; this posts marks ten years of doing this blog. Ten years. Every month. A massive thank you to everyone that has followed, commented and enjoyed the music here. Since I started, a lot of these albums have been remastered, re-issued etc...the entire point of this blog was to highlight the rare, experimental, hard to find and alternative music that I love.

Thanks everyone. x

Anyway, CAN.

This is a compilation of predominantly pre 'Delay 1968' material. I wanted a compilation in an album format to play before the debut.

01. Father Cannot Yell
02. Pnoom(h) 1
03. Little Star of Bethlehem
04. Melting Away
05. (My) Connection
06. She Brings the Rain
07. Outside My Door
08. Pnoom(h) 2
09. Greyhounds Greyhound

To round off a trio of Can posts, here's a boot from 2006. These are 1968 demos.

These posts were prepared before the death of Holger Czukay. They now serve as a tribute.

IRMIN SCHMIDT - KAMASUTRA

Metronome 1969

01. Kamasutra
02. I'm Hiding My Nightingale

After 1968's 'Agilok & Blubbo', the following year saw Irmin Schmidt soundtrack 'Kamasutra'.

This single (the title melody) was released that year, but the full soundtrack wasn't pressed until 2009 and can be found here.

All members of Can feature on this record.

THE INNER SPACE - AGILOK & BLUBBO

Vogue Schallplatten 1968

01. Agilok & Blubbo
02. Kamera Song

For those of you enjoying the excellent compilation 'The Singles' by Can, here's a couple of nearly Can singles.

Released in July 1968, this single is credited to The Inner Space. Michael Karoli has yet to arrive but Holger Czukay, Irmin Schmidt and Jaki Liebezeit provide the soundtrack to the 1968 German movie of the same name.

The full soundtrack wasn't released until 2009 and can be found here.

CAN - MIDNIGHT

This months posts are dedicated to Jaki Liebezeit.

01. Full Moon On the Highway
02. Vernal Equinox
03. Hunters and Collectors
04. Transcendental Express
05. Private Nocturnal
06. Midnight Men
07. Ibis

Opinions differ over the 1975 offering from Can; 'Landed' certainly feels like the first album that isn't flat out great. The band made a lot recordings in 1975 and this was an attempt to assemble an alternative album from that period.

'Full Moon on the Highway' and 'Hunters and Collectors' are from the original 'Landed' album.

'Transcendental Express' and 'Ibis' are from 'Unlimited Edition'.

'Private Nocturnal' and ' Midnight Men' are from 'The Lost Tapes'.

'Vernal Equinox' is a live recording from 'The Old Grey Whistle Test', broadcast on thee BBC, 1975.

23. Only You Two
24. The Master And The Needle

27. Harry: The Thief

Shockingly rare Can now. Originally released in 1982 by Pure Freude on cassette and also as a limited edition tin can containing several tape reels. That was limited to 100 copies.

This was recorded at Inner Space in 1976, but it's not classic Can; this is avant garde collage. Studio chatter, noise, things being hit...the sound of Can pottering in their studio.

A nice re-issue appeared on the Sub Sonum label in 2007. That edition was also limited to 100 copies.

04. Malcolm's Blues
05. I'm So Green
06. Melting Away
07. I'm Hiding My Nightingale

The third and final of my own rare Can compilations.

'Paperhouse' was recorded live for the 'Beat Club' television program.

'Return' was the B-Side of 1977 single 'Don't Say No'

'Malcolm's Blues' and 'Melting Away' are 1968 recordings from SchloB Norevnich.

'I'm So Green' was a 1972 single b/w 'Mushroom'.

'I'm Hiding My Nightingale' was from the 'Kamasutra' soundtrack and the B-Side to the title track for a 7" single in 1969.

'Entropy' was recorded live in Berlin, 1971.

'Silent Night' was a 1976 single.

CAN - RARE ONE

01. Im Calcutta
02. Upduff's Birth
03. Shikako Maru Ten
04. Kamasutra
05. Little Star of Bethlehem
06. Turtles Have Short Legs
07. Theif'
08. Kamerasong

Recently I've been having a right faff around and sort out of music. The joy of going through Can bootlegs. I decided to compile down my favourite unreleased and obscure stuff. Can heads probably have it all, but it's nicely compiled. Taking my cue from 'The Lost Tapes', it's non chronological and mixes up the various vocalist and instrumental periods of Can.

This is the first of three volumes.

'Upduff's Birth' is the unedited version of 'Mother Upduff from 'Unlimited Edition'. Recorded May 1969.
.
'Shikako Maru Ten' was the b-side of the 'Spoon' 7", released in 1971.

'Kamasutra' was a 1969 single credited to The Inner Space. From the movie of the same name. 'Im Calcutta' is taken from the same sessions.

'Little Star of Bethlehem' is a 1971 Schloss Norvenich studio recording.

'Turtles Have Short Legs' was a 'Tago Mago' era single from 1971.

'Theif' is the same take as the version on 'Monster Movie', but a longer edit.

'Kamerasong' is the b-side to 'Agilok & Blubbo'. The A-side being the title song of a movie. Recorded in 1968, credited to The Inner Space & Rosy Rosy.

02. I'm Hiding My Nightingale
03. There Was A Man
04. Im Tempel
05. In Kalkutta III

08. Im Orient
09. Indisches Panorama III

11. Indisches Panorama IV
12. Indisches Panorama V
13. Indisches Panorama VI
14. Indische Liebesszene
15. In Kalkutta II
16. Im Orient II

Another obscure German soundtrack, another example of early Can in the recording studio. This time, to soundtrack Kobi Jaeger's 'Kamasutra'. Again, only a solitary single was released at the time ('Kamasutra'/'I'm Hiding My Nightingale') while the soundtrack album remained unreleased until 2009.

Less Can sounding than 'Agilok & Blubbo', a lot of the music here is short Irmin Schmidt instrumentals. It's good stuff though, very Eastern, tons of flute.

Things get jammy on 'Im Tempel', over ten minutes of sitar driven krautrock, and a lot of the other songs have a sixties, folky feel.

Malcolm Mooney makes his debut  with the group on an early version of 'A Man Named Joe' ('There Was A Man'), elsewhere guest vocals on 'I'm Hiding My Nightingale' are handled by Margareta Juvan.

Addicted to Can? You need this.

THE INNER SPACE - AGILOK & BLUBBO

Wah Wah Records Sound 2009 (Recorded 1968)

01. Agilok And Blubbo
02. Es Zieht Herauf
03. Dialog Zwischen Birken
04. Michele Ist Da
05. Mama Mama
06. Kamerasong
07. Zwischen Den Bäumen
08. Zweige Und Sonne
09. Revolutionslied
10. Der Letzte Brief
11. Probleme
12. Flop Pop
13. Apokalypse

Agilok & Blubbo is a political satire released in 1969, directed by Peter F. Scheneider. Irmin Schmidt was approached for the soundtrack. Fresh from a trip to America, Schmidt has recently decided that his musical future lay in experimental rock music, and not in avant garde classical which he had spent years studying. He assembled a group, The Inner Space, which featured himself, Holger Czukay, Jaki Liebezeit and Michael Karoli. Also included at this time was David Johnson and, as guest vocalist, Rosy Rosy. (That's her on the sleeve, actress Rosemarie Heinikel in a still from the movie.)

Only a single of 'Agilok & Blubbo'/Kamerasong' was released at the time, but in 2009 the tapes of the full soundtrack have been remastered and released.

Agilock & Blubbo find the members of Can creating the musical language with which they would become so fluent in a matter of months. The very next month in fact singer Malcolm Mooney would join and sessions would begin for 'Meet Thy Pnoom' (later named 'Delay 1968').

What you have here is embryonic Can, recognisable snatches can be heard in the insistent drums and bass or in an edit here or there. Not yet the demented garage band of 'Delay' but a bunch of artists discovering a shared love of invention and innovation.

"Blow your mind and move your crutch, tie the double noose of pnoom!"
